Talking about our body can sometimes be a bit awkward for either men or women.  In my profession as a licensed massage therapist, I would say for the last 5 years the subject can’t be ignored.  For ten years since 2004, I was treating weekly a friend/client for peripheral neuropathy on his right leg and also a prostate condition.  He was at the beginning stage of nerve damaged to his genitalia area, a man in his late 50’s with no erection whatsoever.  This condition was mentioned to me by him many months later of just providing massage and manual lymphatic drainage to his right leg.

My first reaction was to discard the idea of having to now work more closely in his groin area, but compassion and love for what I trained in took over and guided me to prepare a protocol for this condition.  Working along with his Urologist we were able to give him weeks of walking on his own and reduce the symptoms of prostate inflammation.

What I learned was that Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) — also called prostate gland enlargement — is a common condition as men get older. An enlarged prostate gland can cause uncomfortable urinary symptoms, such as blocking the flow of urine out of the bladder. It can also cause bladder, urinary tract or kidney problems.

I setup a protocol that was to apply more of a pumping effect with my hands in the inguinal area, also noting that in this area we have numerous lymph nodes that unless they have assisted pumping effect the fluid from the lymph system just sit in this area, causing swelling and doesn’t allow the flushing of liquids from the bladder and in the mentioned case the prostate area to leave the body.

In December of 2011, I discovered Lymphatic Enhancement Technology which with one of their instruments I am sure I could have seen quicker results for my client.  This technology has made it possible for men to get treated before any symptoms of prostate condition as a preventive measure, but unfortunately not many doctors are ready to inform their patients before an invasive procedure is recommended.  In many cases, I get to see my clients after they have had some type of surgery and in some ways assist them heal and educate them of why lymphatic drainage whether manual or with a LET equipment is highly recommended within the first 6 months after any surgery that has done damaged to the lymph vessels, or in some cases lymph nodes have been removed.

One of the known results of lymph nodes removal or non-treated patients are the possibility of edema or as known lymphedema of the extremities such as the arms, when lymph nodes from the armpit has been removed or in cases or hysterectomy, C-Section, Tummy tuck or lymph removal from the inguinal area makes the leg swell up.

As a healthcare provider I feel my ethics within my scope of practice must be to inform myself and then anyone I come into contact on some of the holistic treatments available to prevent or maintain our bodies functioning to the best of their possibilities even in chaotic times.  In the past the only way to acquire educational information was via your doctor, books or word of mouth, today with the accessible, cloud like technology, we can’t continue depend on what one doctor tells you.  Don’t just get a second opinion, get many opinions on all types of treatments that have been around for years, and of the new innovative science tested approaches available.  Take back your health and body and make the appropriate decision to improve your health.
